In 2011, there were 34.2 million people living with HIV. In some 15 African countries, between 5-25 percent of the population has HIV. But Africa is by no means homogeneous and regions vary greatly. While the disease currently affects southern Africa severely, West Africa faces much lower rates of infection, with countries averaging between less than 1 to 4 percent, and North Africa averaging less than 0.1 percent.
